Loved this post Amanda. As another square peg who somehow ended up in corporate communications I so identified with the feelings you share. Now living my best life slow writing.
I think what you're talking about here, among other things, is authenticity - recognizing that a particular way of being doesn't work for whomever you are and then attempting to find what does. When you do find it, yourself, you also discover that your authentic doesn't really work with main stream culture. Having the tools to look for yourself and then the agency to do what is best for that self are gifts, privilege, and should be human rights - we should all have an opportunity to go through this process. I say this because I've been through it and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and I know others who don't have the tools, the agency, etc. to do the same. Of course, we can also refuse the process.
Well, obviously, your post created all sorts of thought avenues for me! Thank you for this ode to being yourself.
I really enjoyed this post. As a fellow 'outsider' I'm always warmed to learn that I'm not alone in not fitting in. I'm glad to have happened across your writing.
As a fellow misfit (one of a legion I am sure) I really enjoyed this piece. Thank you for sharing 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it, Lizzie. And yes I’m sure there’s loads of us!
Thank you for writing this! I could see myself throughout your story like it would be mine. It is beautiful to realise that we don’t have to fit in.
Thanks Michael. I’m happy to hear it resonates with you. Here’s to being outsiders!
