Hello Kate, ah yes those self-imposed standards we all love to hold ourselves to! It makes me very happy to hear that you are getting lots out of this Substack and the RW one. And yay for writing a novel just for fun and just for yourself! I will be cheering you on all the way. It's really hard the first time we do it, I won't lie! But it gets easier, and we get better at it, every time we do it. I just wrote the first bare bones chapter of my new novel and it is way better than the first drafts I wrote for the first two novels. It's doing all the things I've learned and it happened automatically as I wrote. Glad that the added layer to my story made it more poignant and weird! I'm a big fan of both 🤣💙
Yes it's easy to get caught up in all the other things that surround our writing. Whenever I ask writers this question all that other stuff never gets mentioned but the word 'love' comes up a lot.
In the spirit of the club, I'm slow to read these posts and think about the exercises! I only started creative writing during the pandemic and can honestly say my reason for continuing is a love of writing and of exploring through words. I've followed a few courses to try to learn how to improve my writing and hate it when they get too serious and take the fun away. Thankfully, not all courses are like that. I'm finding your posts motivating, so thank you for your inspiration.

Amanda, Thank you for raising the question as to why we started writing in the first place. Sometimes we forget. D
